Crossing the Welsh border for the first time in this Shropshire Premier League season, Shelton Cricket Club’s First XI took on a determined Welshpool team at their Maes-Yr-Dre ground, on a pleasant spring afternoon made for cricket. Welshpool batted first, with Joe Birch’s effervescent 69 from 125 balls the highlight and a cornerstone of the innings. He was eventually bowled by the Australian sensation, Rhett Williamson, who went on to take two wickets. Andy Wiggington is quickly becoming one of the league’s most feared bowlers, and he took seven batsmen in a tremendous performance.
Shelton took the good feeling gained from bowling Welshpool out for 207 through to their own batting, but the going was considerably tougher at the crease. Williamson took another quickfire half-century, 59 from 93 balls, but wicketkeeper Matt Morris also excelled, his 39 runs just reward for consistent endeavour in the middle by the wicketkeeper-batsman.
Welshpool took a winning draw, as Shelton reached 158/7 in their 50 overs, meaning that the Powys team had scored more runs, but not bowled the Shrewsbury side’s batsman out. The result left no-one satisfied, but there were plenty of positive factors for both groups of players.
The Second XI sadly lost to Welshpool at home by two wickets, but Jamie and Keith Martindale shared five wickets, and Adam Humphries top-scored on 50 before being bowled by Welshpool's four-wicket Steve Monk. Photos are attached for the Second-Team match, many thanks to Richard Martindale for sending these.
Upcoming fixtures:
1st XI away to Madeley (7/6/08)
2nd XI home to Madeley (7/6/08)
Midweek XI away to Bomere Heath (10/6/08)
